The Demographic and Life Expectancy of Seniors in Care Homes

December 14, 2020

In many cases our ageing family members and love ones need the extra support and assistance of a care facility to carry on with daily errands and activities. Most senior citizens have special needs that require the help and support of full-time staff at a care home. These care homes are built specifically for the elderly and are equipped with the facilities necessary to assist them with their daily living as well as offer the care and support that is needed for them to enjoy the rest of their lives.

There comes a point in everybody’s life where important questions need to be asked when it comes to their elderly relatives. Are they safe in their home alone? Do they need assistance with daily activities? Are their disabilities enough to warrant the move to a care home?

In many cases our ageing family members and love ones need the extra support and assistance of a care facility to carry on with daily errands and activities. Most senior citizens have special needs that require the help and support of full-time staff at a care home.

These care homes are built specifically for the elderly and are equipped with the facilities necessary to assist them with their daily living as well as offer the care and support that is needed for them to enjoy the rest of their lives.

Unfortunately, during the pandemic living in a care home has meant that our elderly have had to endure months of social isolation in what is meant to be their golden years.

Why do We Need Care Homes for our Elderly?

The main reason for senior citizens going to care homes is that the children or family of the elderly can no longer take care of them when they are living on their own. This can be due to several reasons such as health decline, hearing and sigh loss or other progressive diseases such as dementia and Alzheimer's.

Care homes provide holistic care that focuses on all the aspects of an elderly person’s life. Care plans are reviewed with a focus on physical and mental health, social activities, cognitive ability and nutrition.

This allows for the elderly to get the support and care that they need while retaining their dignity and living out the rest of their life comfortably.

The Life Expectancy of The Elderly Living in Care Homes

The majority of time, a long stay in hospital can mark the transition from home-based care to care home living.  Of these elderly who move to care homes approximately 91 per cent will pass away in the care home with 40 percent of those being within the first nine months of moving into the facility.  On average the length of stay in a care home is 2.1 years for males and 3.2 years for females.

Sadly, research has shown that transitioning into a care home can cause many elderly residents to give up on life after they have been admitted. To this end care homes are equipped to try and make a senior citizens life as comfortable and fulfilling as possible.

How the Demographics of a Care Home Can Affect Senior Citizens

Presently there are approximately 39.5 million people in the United States that are over the age of 65. This number includes 5.6 million people that are over the age of85. It is, however, clear that the current growth rate of both the 65-and-older and 85-and-older is in fact lower than it has ever been in the past century.

This being said, these statistics are more than likely set to change. It has been predicted that in the next one to two years the growth rate amongst the older population is going to increase to nearly double of what it is today.

This steep incline reflects the aging of the baby boomer generation, with approximately75 million people moving into the ranks of the older population over the duration of the next 20 years.

This make for a huge population with co-morbidities during the pandemic that is Covid-19. Unfortunately, this pandemic has become part of our current and more than likely future lives.

At Care2Talk we realized that there was a huge gap in the services available to connect seniors or people with dementia or cognitive disabilities with their caretakers, family or friends. This particularly applies to the way in which our elderly battle to make use of technology to connect with their loved ones.

Our application was built to allow for a better exchange of information since both speaker and listener are able to see and interpret body language and facial expressions. In addition to this, our program can be run by other family members from wherever in the world they maybe situated.

The Pros and Cons of Care Homes

Nursing homes tend to have a negative connotation amongst the aged community, but sometimes they really do make the most sense. These facilities allow for senior citizens to have access to continuous health resources, safety and dignity.

The Pros of Living in Care Homes

Full-Time Care

As family members age, it becomes increasingly difficult for them to care for themselves. Care homes offer facilities that are equipped with the care and medical training that is needed to support our elderly.

Structured Schedules

As people age, it becomes very important for them to keep to a schedule. One of the major benefits of living in a nursing home is its ability to offer its residents a full and structured schedule.

An Active Social Life

At a nursing home, there are always social activities on the go. This allows senior citizens to meet other residents within the same age bracket and to keep up with a more active lifestyle.

These activities are conducted under the supervision of qualified healthcare professionals at the care home.

Unfortunately during Covid this has been unable to happen and, in most cases, can no longer be listed as a pro. Care2Talk has the ability to allow for and retain effective communication between the elderly and their friends and loved ones.

The Cons of Living in Care Homes

Costly

Acquiring a care home for your loved one can cost thousands per year and is often a huge expense due to the specialized facilities and 24-hour care that these facilities provide.

Lack of Freedom

After living independent lives it is very common for the elderly to find it very difficult to move into a care home.  This is due to their worry about losing the freedom that they have been accustomed to their entire lives.  While care homes offer regimented schedules for the elderly so as to benefit their overall health, it can be quite an adjustment.

Care2Talk allows for the ability of integration in care homes by using their application directly within the internal systems of the care home. Senior citizens are able to have contact with not only family and friends, but also with the care home administration, care-aide, kitchen and in-house doctor.

Feelings of Isolation

Even before the onset of Covid-19 the elderly living in care homes had to deal with a certain degree of isolation from their families.

This is due to reasons that are often beyond our control and can include:

·      The distance of the care home facility from the rest of the family members.

·      The way in which our fast paced daily lives have inhibited the ability of regular contact between family members and the elderly living in a care home.
