The Benefits of Being an Early Adopter

February 24, 2021

Care2Talk identified that there was a gap in services available to connect seniors or people with dementia or cognitive disabilities with their caretakers, family or friends. The saying “You don’t know what you have until it is gone” will definitely resonate with many of our senior citizens. These people were once able to go to work every day, eat lunch at their favourite restaurant and meet up with friends and family on the weekend for a barbeque.

Then the Covid-19 pandemic hit. It impacted the world in its entirety and has been the cause of sickness, social isolation and even death, especially amongst those who are most vulnerable such as those with co-morbidities and the elderly. Senior citizens have had to stay isolated in their care homes so as to protect themselves from contracting the deadly virus.

Needless to say, this has caused much anguish, sadness and anxiety amongst senior citizens who are no longer able to receive visits from their loved ones.

The Importance of Regular Communication with Our Elderly

Depression can become quite prevalent in elderly people who are unable to maintain relationships with others. Depression in senior citizens is caused by the fact that many who were once socially active, even in their care homes, now have to spend most of the time on their own.

Studies have shown that socializing helps to keep an elderly persons mind active. The Alzheimer’s Association recommends that seniors should connect regularly with others to help stabilize and maintain brain activity. The statistics are even better when an elderly person is involved in fun activities with other people who have the same interests (source).

During Covid19, being alone has become the new normal and elderly people have had to spend most of their time away from social gatherings so as to prevent them in their vulnerability from being exposed to the virus.

The Internet and The Elderly

According to a study conducted by The World Economic Forum about 70 percent of seniors are online every day (source). Of those senior citizens who are online, their main reason is to stay in contact with their family and friends.

These statistics highlight the importance of socializing for seniors and how it can be used to prevent loneliness and depression especially amidst the current pandemic.  Technology has given senior citizens a new way to interact with loved ones without having to physically be around them.

Current technology also allows seniors with limited mobility to have the opportunity to communicate and spend time with friends and family. It is extremely important for us as caregivers to understand how critical socializing is for them, and how the lack of it can affect their mental and emotional health.

It is important family members of senior citizens to encourage more social interaction, even if they have limited mobility and can’t enjoy the same events and friendships that they once did.

Encourage your loved one to try using technology to communicate with others. Even though this may be a daunting task, there are many ways in which to teach them how to use basic technology.

For some elderly people, services like Skype or other video calling applications proved too be too confusing to navigate and use.  At Care2Talk we realized that there was a huge gap in the services available to connect seniors or people with dementia or cognitive disabilities with their caretakers, family or friends. Our application allows for a better exchange of information since both speaker and listener are able to see and interpret body language and facial expressions.
